ABC grants Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a second season and picks up Agent Carter

ABC has made some unsurprising announcements for the 2014-2015 viewing season. Modern Family has the green light for a sixth season while Trophy Wife has been dropped. The Goldbergs is getting a second season and, unsurprisingly, so is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The big programming shakeup this week is the announcement of a second Marvel show that will  air  this year.

Marvel’s Agent Carter is confirmed as a pilot-less short series and is expected to air on the winter break between sessions of the already popular Agents of SHIELD. with Hayley Atwell in the lead as title character Peggy Carter and an expected return of Dominic Cooper as millionaire genius Howard Stark, Agent Cooper is set in 1946 and will explore the origins of the organization that will later become SHIELD. The show is expected to take a similar format to its sister show, Carter will likely be sent on various missions by Stark. There will probably also be some very personal drama involved as we see Peggy cope with the loss of Captain America and carry on in the aftermath of the war.

The likely placement oAgent Carter is a little questionable.  The short series is widely expected to air during the winter break in Agents of SHIELD’s normal time slot, but this could kill the series before it gets a start. These breaks are built into the viewing season for ratings reasons and premiering Agent Carter as a stopgap forAgents of SHIELD doesn’t do service to Marvel’s first true leading lady.
