Amazon Acquires ComiXology

Earlier today Amazon announced that they are acquiring digital comics publishing platform ComiXology. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but rumors of this acquisition have popped up in recent weeks. ComiXology was founded in 2007 and has steadily grown into the industry leading platform for digital comics distribution. They currently boast content from over 75 publishers including, the heavyweights, DC and Marvel Comics.

A lot has changed in the digital comics space since 2007. With the growth of smartphone and tablet adoption digital comics have become quite popular. ComiXology alone surpassed 200 million comic book downloads last year.

“ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms,” said David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology. “There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

With the popularity of Amazon’s family of Kindle devices, and the availability of some graphic novels via the Kindle Store, the acquisition of ComiXology will only serve to bolster Amazon’s presence in the ebook and digital comics space. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014.
