Bradley Cooper Officially Cast as Rocket Raccoon: My Thoughts!

Posted August 30, 2013 by Alden Diaz in Movies

Ladies and gentlemen, everyone’s favorite gun-toting, wisecracking space-raccoon has found his voice! Bradley Cooper has been officially announced as the voice of Rocket Raccoon in Marvel Studios and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The film, which is set for an August 1st 2014 release, has now officially earned the title of “Blockbuster With Most Interesting and Awesome Cast.” Before Bradley Cooper was even a rumor, the film already had a cast that made me fanboy with excitement: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, etc. And now Marvel has surprised me with a “Batfleck-style” out-of-left-field decision in making Cooper the official voice of Rocket. I must say, I’m surprisingly pleased with the decision. bradley_a

I’ll be honest, Bradley Cooper wouldn’t have been my first choice. To be even more honest, he NEVER would have crossed my mind for the role if it wasn’t for the insane amount of Rocket Raccoon casting rumors that have floated around the internet in recent months. To take it even further, I was MARRIED to the David Tennant/Gary Oldman rumors. So naturally, one could expect me to be pretty disappointed with this decision. But I must say, I’m not. I think that Bradley Cooper is an excellent choice for Rocket Raccoon for a few reasons. First off, Bradley Cooper is one of those actors that doesn’t treat his performances like work. You can tell that he’s having a blast in every single one of his major roles. He really seems to put in his best possible effort, particularly in Limitless and the incredible Silver Linings Playbook. The man just LOVES ACTING and he’s coming at it as a performer and a fan of the art form. Secondly, I think that Cooper is in interesting choice because unlike Jason Statham or David Tennant, he has a voice that I believe could truly become the character’s voice. It’s not recognizable to the point where I’ll find myself thinking “This is Bradley Cooper AS Rocket.” instead of “This IS Rocket!” It’ll be even more awesome if Cooper and James Gunn decided to give Rocket his signature Cockney/Scottish accent (depending on which Guardians fan you ask). As a HUGE fan of Guardians of the Galaxy (they’re my favorite comic book team), I’d love nothing more than to hear Rocket’s accent, but even if they don’t go there, I think Cooper’s voice will fit well, especially with the sarcastic quips and wisecracks. Lastly, I have faith in this casting choice BECAUSE of James Gunn. The man has said before that he signed on to the project mostly because of Rocket Raccoon. He’s the most invested in Rocket, and I think that says a lot about the care he’d put into casting the role.

Overall, I think this is a great casting choice. He’s not the actor I would have gone with, but just like Ben Affleck as Batman, I can fully support it and I hope for the best. Of course, there will be people that disagree with me on this one. In fact, I can hear the cries of rage in the distance…but hey, that’s why we’re comic book fans right? We’re THAT passionate about this stuff. But before the petitions start, I think we should give Cooper a chance. I think he’ll surprise us.
