Everything We Know About the Nintendo Switch

Posted October 21, 2016 by Spencer Birch in Video Games

Early this morning Nintendo released an announcement video for their newest console Nintendo Switch. It features what looks to be around a 6 inch HD handheld display with detachable controllers, and a dock for TV play. We were even lucky enough to see some brief gameplay of some upcoming titles including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 (featuring portable split screen, new characters and an added item slot), and Bethesda’s Skyrim Remaster. The main gimmick here is of course the ability to take your system out of the living room and play it on the go. By simply lifting the screen (with controllers attached) out of the dock you move to portable play seamlessly. The Switch will utilize cartridges for play similar to the 3DS.

Nintendo has also released a list of partners for the Switch which includes Bethesda, From Software, Square Enix and many more!

Nintendo is calling their new, detachable controller the Joy-Con, but will also offer a more traditional controller separately, presumably for TV Play. It looks like the Joy-Con(s) will detach from the system and can be charged using their own dock. The preview video also shows people using Switch to play split screen portably by removing the Joy-Con and using them horizontal et al the Wii Remote.

The jury is still out on specifics like battery life, price, full launch lineup and more, but some major retailers like Amazon already have the Switch up in their store, so keep your eyes peeled for more info! The Nintendo Switch is slated for release in March 2017.
