Godshaper #1 is a nice little first issue that does a wonderful job at introducing the characters and the unique world within the pages.
Written by Simon Spurrier and illustrated by Jonas Goonface, Godshaper introduces a man named Ennay who just so happens to be a titular Godshaper. Godshapers are people who hold the mysterious power to mold and shape gods. In this world, gods exist uniquely for each and every person in the world (except for people like Ennay whom are called a “nogody”). Alongside Ennay is a god named Bud who looks like a classic cartoon image of a ghost who doesn’t seem to have a human he belongs to.
This unlikely duo travels the land shaping gods and playing gigs and otherwise just simply trying to survive.
Spurrier’s writing really shines here as he manages to create a compelling first issue that does an immense amount of world building in a short amount of time. In addition, he gives us plenty of reasons to want to come back to the world of Godshaper and sets up some interesting plots that promise to at least be interesting.
Goonface’s art ties all this together. Gods are unique and differ plenty in appearance. Each god was interesting to look at and the variation makes the intrigue all that more interesting. His human characters also have an ton of variation to them and the title looks to have a fairly diverse main cast which is a visual delight. Goonface’s art is a high point for sure and appears to be the perfect fit for a title like Godshaper.
Godshaper #1 is an excellent first issue that makes me eager to visit the rest of the series as both the writing and artwork are stellar. If you want an original title then look no further. Godshaper #1 is here.
