Marvel Announces “Original Sin” Event

A week into the new year, and Marvel has already announced their newest event comic! Continuing the event craze that the publisher seems to be on, Marvel has announced Original Sin, a crossover event that will begin in May of this year, and it will be written by none other than Jason Aaron, the current writer of series such as Wolverine and the X-Men and Thor: God of Thunder at Marvel, and will be drawn by Mike Deodato Jr, who has done the art for series such as The Avengers and Batman. This is all the news that lacks spoilers. In addition to the main event series, which will be eight issues long and double ship, numerous tie-ins have been promised, though no exact details as to which books will tie in has been confirmed as of this time. In addition, there will be a zero issue written by Mark Waid (Indestructible HulkDaredevil) and illustrated by Jim Cheung (Young Avengers, Secret Avengers). This zero issue will be from the viewpoint of Sam Alexander, the current Nova in the Marvel Universe.  If you do not want key plot points of the event to be spoiled, do not read past this, and certainly DO NOT look at the images.

Warning: AGAIN, MAJOR SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

It appears that, in Original Sin, the all powerful Watcher has been murdered. Of course, the duties of uncovering the murderer of one of the universe’s most powerful entities as well as safeguarding his secrets falls to the guardians of Earth in this line-wide event. It has also been released that this event will center around the original Nick Fury and some of the older Avengers (Captain America, Iron Man, Thor) as well as many other characters to hunt the Watcher’s killer.

However, this will not be the only group investigating the Watcher’s murder. A team of characters including Doctor Strange, The Punisher, Black Panther, Emma Frost, and Ant Man will also assemble to to hunt down The Watcher’s killer. Jason Aaron himself has stated that the relationship between Punisher and Doctor Strange will play out “like a buddy cop movie.” An interesting pairing, and definitely a new take on the characters for sure.

Editor Tom Brevoot has also stated, in an interview with USA Today (Great place to break the news Marvel) that, due to the release of all of The Watcher’s secrets, “The stakes involved in Original Sin are much more personally involved.” It can be assumed that this is in comparison to recent events such as last year’s Age of Ultron  and InfinityHe went on to say that “It’s all the characters having to deal with something that throws their whole world for a loop in a very cutting close to the heart way.” Based on this statement, and past works of Jason Aaron’s it seems that this will be a far more character driven event.
