I know, I know, the debut issue of this series caused a lot of controversy, but putting that to one side I personally thought the first issue of this mini-series was excellent in many ways. Set in 1927 Mississippi exploring the racism of the time, along with fantasy elements, the Mississippi River is flooding, but the citizens of Chatterlee are more worried about the colossus and what his presence means for their town. Shortly following the release of issue 1, it criticism centered around the appropriateness of Jones and Waid (two white creators) attacking the subject of racism against the Black population. I am really looking forward to the second issue and am really keen to see where this story is going and also I just wanna see some beautiful artwork.
Honorable mentions: Star Trek / Green Lantern #4 (IDW); Assassins Creed #1 (Titan Comics)

I’m going to be entirely honest, this book wasn’t at all on my radar until I read the recent preview in Avengers #0. The Avengers buyout of A.I.M. in Hickman’s run is one of the few points of the run I never cared about, however Ewing seems to be taking the idea and running with it. Coming off his amazing Doctor Who run, Ewing seems perfectly versed in crazy sci-fi plots, which the preview featured in spades. While I enjoyed the epic nature of Hickman’s avengers books, this more fun and energetic approach looks just what the doctor ordered. With a great creative team, an excellent rooster of Avengers, and the return of evil 1610 Reed Richards as the villain, New Avengers is a title that shouldn’t slip under your radar.
Which books are you looking forward to this Wednesday, let us know in the comments……
