Available on: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S (reviewed on Xbox Series S)
The Metal Gear Solid series set the standard for stealth/action games. Previously the series had been collected in an HD set on the PS3, Playstation Vita, and Xbox 360 in 2011. This new collection doesn’t have new graphical upgrades for the current consoles, but it is chock full of content. As it is a Volume 1, a second compilation is likely to come in the future containing the later games like Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, and Phantom Pain. This current collection is lacking any behind the scenes videos, but there’s still plenty here to make it worth the purchase for fans. Content includes:
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid (including the VR Missions and Special Missions)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD)
Metal Gear (NES/FC version)
Snake’s Revenge
Digital Soundtrack
Two graphic novels
Master books for all games detailing characters and plot
PROS
Loaded with content
Solid stories and voice acting
Gameplay holds up decently
Games are left with all original content intact
Excellent music
CONS
Some technical issues
No graphical upgrades since the 2011 HD collection
No option for more modern control schemes
For fans, this new collection, despite some flaws, is well worth the purchase for its large amount of content. Those unfamiliar with older game systems may find the two oldest games here a bit challenging and frustrating, but story wise all the games hold up. There are some technical issues, such as audio dropping, but Konami has said they will be addressed in post launch patches. Hopefully Volume 2 won’t be too long in coming, so fans can enjoy the entire series on modern consoles.
