The Warhammer series of games, both tabletop and video, come in a variety of flavors, covering both fantasy (Chaosbane) to sci-fi third person shooter (Inquisitor: Martyr) to tactical strategy games (Space Wolf). So it would only make sense that the series gets a retro shooter in the style of the first Doom game. Warhammer 40000: Boltgun is a perfect fit for a retro shooter, with plenty of levels to conquer and a host of secrets to find. While it is short on plot and does get repetitive before it wraps up, the game is very fun to play, as turning the various enemies into bloody goo never gets old.

PROS
Fun to play
Four solid weapons to use, each with a more powerful variation
Responsive controls
Good reto style graphics
Varied levels
Fast paced

CONS
Not much in the way of plot (mostly it’s purge heretics)
Repetitive
Occasional bad camera angle
AI guide not always so helpful, can be easy to get lost

If you’ve been itching for a retro shooter a la the first Doom or Quake, then Warhammer 40000: Boltgun is the game for you. It’s fast paced, solid in its shooting mechanics, and a lot of fun to play. It does get a bit repetitive before the end, and it has a very barebones plot, but for a twenty dollar game those flaws can be overlooked. It’s an absolute joy to play for the most part, and shooter fans as well as Warhammer fans should pick up.
