Owlcat Games, the folks behind Pathfinder: Kingmaker, make a jump to the massive Warhammer 40K universe with their new CRPG Warhammer 40000: Rogue Trader. The game casts you as a distant relative to Theodora von Valencius, a Rogue Trader whose realm is in the Koronus Expanse. Things arise to put your character into the titular role, and set you on course for a lengthy and meaty campaign (a playthrough can top 100 hours) with multiple endings depending on how you play. It does involve a lot of reading as it reveals a lot of lore, and is not the friendliest to newbies to the genre. Those familiar with CRPGs will find plenty to like, though it’s not without some technical issues.

PROS
Lengthy campaign with no real filler
Excellent writing and voice acting
Multiple endings
Turn based combat
Good amount of customization in character creation
Choices matter
Diverse environments
CONS
Not friendly to newbies to the CRPG genre
Some technical issues
Characters repeat same four lines of dialogue while walking about
Lot of text to wade through

Owlcat Games delivered well with Rogue Trader, despite a few missteps along the way. The massive campaign and multiple endings make it worthwhile for veterans of the genre to dive into. A good voice cast and excellent writing also lift the game up. A great additon to the Warhammer 40K universe of games.
