Heroes in a half shell are back! So is Batman! Cowabunga!
The much awaited sequel to Batman/TMNT is back with a vengeance! Tynion and Williams continue the oddball saga of what happens when one of the most brooding of heroes meets Leonardo and his crew. The best parts of the first comic run are still here: It’s action packed, fun, and silly. It never takes itself too seriously, and it’s in that that makes this book so fan to read. There are references to some fan favorites and some are actively shown, especially on the villain side.
Tynion manages to balance the action with humor in this chapter even though not a lot happens in terms of there being a true crossover just yet. It is more of a pre-cursor to things to come. It looks like this time Batman might be visiting New York! The character work here is still solid however, and even if the plot does not progress too far, it does have moments that will make both Turtles and Batman fans wanting to come back for more.
Williams’ art is as stellar as it ever was with more and more details on every panel. It feels like this is his passion project. He puts so much of himself in each panel making sure that everything is perfect. Some panels even look like paintings, which is amazing to see in a comic book. There is a very specific page where one of the famous villains is revealed that shows just how right Williams’ style is exactly the right one for this crossover.
The Batman/Turtles crossover continues to show us that the Dark Knight does not have to be serious and brooding all the time and sometimes you just need a slice of pizza to join in the fun. If you have read the first six issue series of this book, you know what to expect and if you did not and are fans of the property, you can definitely jump in here as it is a self-contained story in its own right.
