Eye of Newt #2 Review

Written by: Michael Hague

Art by: Michael Hague

Publisher: Dark Horse

Eye of Newt is , to put it bluntly, an interesting book. There is so much going on within its 24 pages that it is at times incredibly overwhelming, in both the story and the art that accompanies it.

Following Newt, a young apprentice on his way to become a Wizard and to do so must go on a quest in order to prove his worth. The book feels as though you are in a role-playing game, and some of the concepts within are a joy to follow. The issue also sees some serious character development in Newt from the first issue.

The art matches the story to perfection, and having this be all one mans vision (Michael Hague) helps in getting the point across. However, unfortunately due to the style of the art it is at times difficult to tell what is going on in some of the unconventional panels with images not being quite as clear as perhaps they should be. Yet saying that, the art is magical and really does set the tone for what the book is all about.

The adventure itself is a good follow, and the inclusion of a flying frog does break up some of the monotony of some of the more simple walking and talking that Newt does. With this now being the half way point of the mini-series, things will surely have to pick up in the next issue so that we have a thrilling climax to this book.
