This is one looney and rascally comic book full of humor and excitement!
Well if anyone was looking for the greatest team ups in comic book history, this is most likely not what they had in mind. What Legion of Superheroes does do is bring back the feel of watching old Looney Toons cartoons but with the addition of superheroes. Humphries has a strong understanding of the superhero genre, not taking things too seriously himself while poking fun at the establishment that do. How do you defeat a group of superhero teenagers? Make them angsty of course!
The whole book feels like it was ripped from the t.v. screen and slapped on the page. Hijinks start when one famous rabbit joins the fray and adds his own special type of humor. What Legion of Superheroes succeeds at is just how seemless the interactions between Bugs and the Legion are. Bugs making fun of every member of the Legion is unique and far from a determent to any of the characters present, such as the Bugs/Sun Eater Boy interaction.
This book does exactly what it’s supposed to do, which is be fun and just enough zany to be part of the Looney lexicon.
Tom Grummet’s art is also very welcome here, as he is able to bring all of this craziness to the page perfectly. One wonders why is he not working on bigger titles for DC. He has a lot of 90’s style in his art, which fits this book, especially during the crazy final battle between Legion and Bugs.
But where Grummet’s art really shines is in the facial expressions, especially Bugs Bunny’s when he was either scared or confused about what was going on. It really brings the Looney Toons feel to this book.
Overall, if you grew up watching Looney Toons or just want a break from usual comic book stories and tropes, pick this up and have some fun. Plus, seeing Legion again even so briefly is always refreshing!
PS. As I said there was a back up story done by Juan Manuel Ortiz, which pretty much retells the main story, with some added and changed scenes, but it is done in a cartoon style versus a comic book style, and that particular side story really feels like it came straight off the page and worth checking out!
