There is a certain expectation when you pick up a Skottie Young written and drawn comic, the style is distinctive and the storytelling methodical. There is also a layer of humour, that is present in Young’s books, that is absent from many “funny” comics that are available for purchase by the big publishers. However, even with that being the case no two of his books are alike.
Rocket Raccoon, is a masterfully funny and intriguing book to behold. The art is very “Skottie Young”, and with the help of Jean-Francous Beaulieu it gets elevated to another level. It would be interesting to look at this book with the colours removed, as I believe (without taking any credit away from the colourer) that there would still be an element of brilliance to the approach to art.
The way in which the sound affects on the page, are used to enrich the story being told is pure genius and also adds another element of comedy to the already humorous story.
The story itself is absurd, and would only work in this style of story telling. It is a comic in its truest sense. Rocket is still on his way to meet Funtzel , following his recent prison break…and there is still the little matter of who framed Rocket to deal with.
Rocket Raccoon is a book everyone should be at least trying out, especially those fans of the recent Guardians of the Galaxy movie as issue 2 could have been lifted straight out of that.
