Super Sons Annual #1 Review

Written by: Peter Tomasi

Art by: Paul Pelletier

Published by: DC Comics

Dogs are disappearing all across Gotham. Who you gonna call?! Super Pets!

When there is a case not even the Super Sons can solve, their furry friends are here to leap to the rescue! This annual is bringing our favorite pets together in a brand new adventure not seen for a very long time.

Tomasi manages the almost-impossible by making sure that each one of the pets has a very distinct personality, especially Streaky. There’s some very nice conflict between Krypto and Streaky, and a joyful, developing friendship between Kyrpto and Titus. That being said, the humans aren’t ignored. Damian and Jon’s quips are still here at the beginning and the end.

Tomasi brings enough of fun hijinks so the book is never boring. it’s also nice to see an annual that only has one, singular story with a single artist.

Paul Pelletier art here is fantastic when it concentrates on the pets. Their personality is shown with so much care. Pelletier especially shines anytime when the quips between the pets needs to be shown and since there are no translations to what Krypto, Streaky, and the gang are saying it falls doubly hard on the artist to portray the dialogue. He manages to do so well. Where the book does suffer a bit, though, is when the stars of Super Sons are actually on page. Their portrayal is somewhat angular, aging them quite a bit.

Super Sons Annual #1 is not without its flaws, but it is highly enjoyable, especially for the fans of the Super Pets team.
