Winterworld #1 Review

I have never read the acclaimed tale of Winterworld by Chuck Dixon and Jorge Zaffino of a completely frozen future planet Earth and this first issue of a new ongoing series brought to us by Chuck Dixon is not really going to make me want to.

The premise of the story is one of survival in a frozen future, this issue tells the story of Scully, a sawy trade ride, and Wynn, a young woman separated from her family, moving together though the frozen planet in search of Wynn’s parents where they encounter the brutality of not only the conditions but humans too. I didn’t like this issue, plain and simple, I felt it was very over-written and this subsequently made the pacing of the book very slow. I didn’t feel any emotional connection to the characters and I felt their personalities were quite wooden and their dialogue very forced.

My feelings of the lack of emotional connection I had with the book is reinforced by the art which I felt lacked any sort of detail both on the faces of the characters and also the scenic imagery.

Perhaps if you are a fan of the original work you might like this, but I for one felt it was one of the weakest books I have read in a long time.
