Gotham’s Season one ended on a solid note. From the roller coaster of consistency that is this show it somehow ended with a good foundation to start up next year. You have to imagine the gang war that filled a lot of this season is over. At least on this big scale. It’s strange to think that both Falcone and Maroni are both out of the picture before even the thought of Batman. Maybe they have children, who know. But now that Fish is Dead (or at least freezing in the river.) Moroni has some Women’s lib classes to attend in hell. And Falcone is sitting on a beach somewhere listening to classical music. It’s all up to penguin now it pulls this city’s underbelly up by its bootstraps.
But just like any other episode of Gotham this one had its lulls, As intriguing as it is to see Bruce investigate his father, we never really seen all that much of it and it had nothing to do with the story at large. His father was just keeping secrets, just general secrets that will most likely fleshed out next year. His deduction about his father being a Stoic was kind of funny leap to make but so is the fact that his father has a bat cave before Batman. Either way it was a good final scene for Alfred and Bruce to stare down into this unknown cave that will soon consume both of their lives. Maybe next year we can get some sort of closer on the Wayne Murders, catch Joe Chill or something. For a show that started at that moment, it feels a bit odd to ignore it the rest of the season.

“That dog reminds me of Barbara…”
The other child on this show got whisked away by Fish Mooney and her gang of nobodys–what ever happen to that guy she went back to save at the mansion. She seemingly cared for him Right?–The only way for the writers to incorporate Selina Kyle into this finale was to make her a member of Fish’s gang. Which I’m alright with, but the fact that they set that up within the first minute of this episode and the scene only lasted about two minutes was really lazy. Why not end last week’s episode with that scene of Fish Getting off the Boat, so at least it’s believable that Selina is drunk on Fish’s Kool-aid. And the Fact that she is slavishly fallowing orders doesn’t make a whole lot of sense either. Selina has been portrayed as a very independent and carefree girl why would she suddenly follow this lady who talks funny.
And then There’s Butch, I won’t spend a lot of time on him because the show clearly didn’t and most people probably don’t know who he is either, and yet he gets a bunch of screen time. So one of the many examples that the writers are grasping at straws is the fact that they couldn’t decide whether Butch was Brainwashed this season or not. First he was a brainwashed slave for penguin then he said it was all a ruse but he will still work with the penguin, and then when fish gets back he’s all weird about it. And it seemed as if Fish and Butch had more than a Partner relationship. Either way he was a significant factor in the final Fish, Penguin fight. It was pretty well done. I mean there was no drama because we both know Penguin doesn’t die, but it was a very well executed scene.

“They said providing therapy to your boyfriends ex would be easy.”
The more I watch these final episodes, the more captivated I am by Erin Richards and her Barbara. Her character is so strange and insane that I wonder what made the writers hate her so much. She lost her mind on Leslie, who’s qualifying trait as a character is the fact that she isn’t Barbara, and it was a great fight scene between those two ladies. It was intense and watching Leslie slam Barbara’s head against the floor one thing kept running through my mind. “This is bat-girls mom.” And the revelation that Barbara killed her Parents was a crazy twisted fact, which made her losing her mind on Barbara even more nuts. But nuts in the best way. It would be virtually impossible to bring Barbara back from this in any believable way unless of course she’s dead now. But what started out as an annoying art curating girlfriend to Jim Gordon ended up being a psychopath ready to kill people. You have to admit that is the most dramatic character arc anybody on this show has had.
Loeb and Gordon were going to be a good direction the show was ending us on, but it turn out that no, there was no real payoff with those two people headbutting. And that disappointing. This episode really revolved around the gang war, and hearing Gordon say “He’s done” in this town and wishing Loeb was dead all fell flat once I realized there wasn’t going to be a payoff. But a substantial action scene in the hospital for Gordon, If this episode did anything great it was the shoot outs or fights. But in other small news it seems that Nygma is losing his mind. That was a cool scene where he started talking to himself, and it makes you wonder if he’s been talking to himself all this time. I have to imagine that he will start to spiral out of control next year and become the Riddler before Bruce’s 13th birthday.
This Episode was like a lot every other episode this season inconsistent and weird writing. The season finale does some good things to set up next year like Penguin claiming to be the “King of Gotham” and Nygma Losing his mind. But also moving things aside that were the focus of this year. Like the gang war. And seeing Maroni die would’ve been a good surprise if I didn’t watch it coming from a mile away. But then like every other episode there were some downs like Selina being a goon for fish and Butch being integral to the climax. Barbara is either dead or on her way to Arkham and Loeb lives to fight another day. An albeit entertaining episode with some head scratching moments.
