Gotham concludes for the year with a solid finale and some cool teases even if they make you question the absurd timeline this show projects. Bruce almost got sacrificed. Alfred sat around in the dumpster until he was able to find Penguin and Gordon to storm the castle. Galavand’s plan obviously failed, But Tabitha and Silver escaped. Gordon is now a dirty cop who wants to marry Ms. Tompkins. And Luscious finally got that hard drive that we all forgot about fixed. So plenty to talk about when you break it down,
Bruno Heller wrote this episode; He’s also the showrunner. It’s certainly a step up from its normal writing even with the odd little moments but this episode flowed very well. I felt like the best moments were Bruce and Silver in his cell. Kid actors can be tricky and not very good. But David Mazouz and Natalie Alyn Lind did a great job alone in a cell that is a hard thing to do for any actor. Sure Galavand essentially pimping out his niece was weird and cringe-worthy, but it made for some good one on one time. The moment that worked well was when Silver professed her love to Bruce, and I couldn’t tell whether she was still playing him or not. I think she may have been, but something told me that she wasn’t lying about that imparticular moment. But Bruce’s response was even better. Saying that “No” he doesn’t love her, and he has pity for her because of the situation, she is in. This young boy has certainly become more cold and calculating. He even told Alfred and Selina after the rescue that he had a plan to get out of it all along. A very Batman move. And at the pace of these villains coming out of the woodwork he will be needed sooner rather than later.
Gordon had his obvious conclusion by killing Galavand. This season has been driving towards that sort of moment, but I thought it was very well done. His poor soon to be wife Leslie still has the same stuff to say along with the fact that she’s pregnant. Makes the next few episodes easy to shoot because Morena Baccarin is pregnant in real life. But on top of all her other boring dialog she gets the worst proposal in the world! Gordon simply says “It’s done.” and then a pause, and he says, “Will you marry me?” then she smiles…? What?! why? Why on earth would she say yes he’s a miserable wreck no wonder Barbara went nuts. Also simply from a writers point of view. Having a baby on TV is never a good idea. Nothing ever comes from it. Name one good TV baby that comes during the shows run.
As the ragtag group of outlaws and cops/Alfred went to Galavands tower –By the way did they walk all the way there with guns and bullet proof vests on? Seems like a poor idea since the police are looking for you.– Luscious Fox joined them for a portion, and I enjoyed him. It makes me sad he was only in maybe two episodes. He figured out Nigma’s Riddle easily, and he brought the reinforcements that Gordon didn’t necessarily need, but I’m sure it helped. Penguin was very much in the background for this episode, but it worked well. He had some good moments while singing with Nigma and reacting to the pregnancy news. He didn’t get his revenge seeing as Gordon made him stop beating him up and shot him in the face. But the umbrella down the throat was a nice touch.
So as for the future we got to see more of that weird underground facility and the mention of Hugo Strange. Which makes sense because if Bruce becomes Batman at 28-30. Hugo Strange could be like late 30’s early 40’s at this point. And then after that we got to see a cool sequence of Mr. Freeze. Which makes no sense, but I’ll talk about that in a second. However, that guy was running from Mr. Freeze in some pretty cool looking gear. Obviously the Animated series takes credit for making him a great villain, but I don’t necessarily feel bad for whoever that guy was. Mr. Freeze is not a crazy killer he just wants justice for what was done to him or his wife. That being said they could just do a different take and maybe that’s why Mr. Freeze is appearing 20 years before he is supposed to. Canon out the window at this point, right? This show fits nowhere in any interpretation of Batman, but I suppose that works for and against them in many ways. But whether we learn anything about Freeze will be determined in February.

“Ice to meet you…”
