As Justified heads into the final run of episodes, unexpected events become more and more frequent. These events help make the final season more entertaining in a way that many other shows fail to achieve. The latest episode, “Trust” included events that were almost shocking while simultaneously continuing to tie up some loose ends. The end result was a fantastic episode that managed to surprise and entertain while making the episode seem much too short.
During “Trust”, the main focus was a storyline involving Boyd trying to rob Avery Markham of $10 million. After the failed robbery at the pizza parlor, Boyd set out to find a new method involving hijacking a truck with some assistance by Wynn Duffy and some other criminals. Unfortunately for them, Raylan was wise to this plan, so he was also in pursuit of the money truck. So, Boyd had to request help from Limehouse, the man who hated him with a passion. Limehouse was obviously willing to help because of good nature, but he needed a “down-payment.”
Of course, Markham spent the episode trying to figure out how to trick Boyd and get his money to safety, but Raylan made this objective more difficult. Raylan has spent a good portion of this sixth season messing with the minds of the different criminals, and “Trust” was no different. The Marshal had multiple run-ins with Markham in which Raylan spent time convincing him that nobody was trustworthy, including his fiance and all of his friends. It was quite entertaining watching the paranoia set in as the episode progressed. One other issue with Markham’s plan was the fact that some characters decided to take something very precious to him in exchange for the $10 million.
Lastly, Wynn Duffy spent his portion of the episode alternating between helping Raylan and the Marshals, helping Boyd and the criminals, and conversing with his assistant Mike. This multifaceted approach to the episode wasn’t the safest bet for Duffy, but his different interactions were very interesting. Apparently, Mike is smarter than originally portrayed. Plus, no one actually knows if Boyd or Katherine Hale are aware that Duffy is helping Raylan with his investigations. There is a good chance that Duffy will end up dead by the series’ end because of perceived betrayal, but at least he was a fun character to watch throughout the years.
Justified is ramping up the intensity heading into the final three episodes, and the story just keeps getting better. Obviously, the main portions of the season revolve around Raylan, Boyd, Ava, and Avery Markham, but these aren’t the only stories that matter. Markham’s group of criminal flunkies has played a major role in the final season with a lot of success. Granted, the main group members have all disappeared from the show, but the new character, Boon, has taken the center stage with his innate weirdness. Unlike Choo Choo or Walker, Boon is impossible to like, so he becomes the perfect villain. This character is so utterly creepy and evil that you simply hope for his demise.
“Trust” was an absolutely fantastic episode to watch, except for one minor issue. The episode kept you engaged for so long that the hour run-time just flew by. All of a sudden, something big was happening and the show was rolling credits. The final five minutes of Justified’s latest episode were completely unexpected in the best possible way. Something shocking happened, no one had time to recover, and a lot of storylines were left hanging. This ending perfectly set the stage for the final three episodes with a cliffhanger that came out of nowhere but somehow also managed to pay off an old storyline. Justified appears to be heading for an impressive finish.
