In a (quite frankly shocking) announcement, SEGA has announced that they’re going to be doing something with the little blue hedgehog that isn’t Sonic: the Lost World DLC! In fact, they’ve announced the launch of a whole new portion of the Sonic universe, which they are calling “Sonic Boom.” Nice pun, SEGA. Of course, this new universe will feature at least one video game, which will undoubtedly be called Sonic Boom, and will be exclusive to Nintendo consoles, the three game in their exclusivity deal which also includes Sonic: The Lost World and is slated to include Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which has the most unnecessarily lengthy title ever.
However, even more interesting is that this newly announced portion of the universe will include other Sonic products, aside from the video games. The characters are being completely redesigned for the game, but also for the upcoming line of toys as well as a CG animated series, which is sent to launch this year, and have a run of 52 11 minute episodes. All of these products will feature Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. All in all, this is great news for Sonic fans, who have been starved of any new Sonic content outside of the occasional video game. Hiroyuki Miyazaki haf this to say about the new universe:
“SEGA is constantly looking to feed the appetite of Sonic fans, new and existing alike. The various pieces of the Sonic Boom project, such as its unique look, mix of comedy, and action and its focus on the whole ensemble with Sonic as the star, offer another exciting part of that universe for people to explore and enjoy. It will be at once familiar but also new.”
