Spoilers! This article will talk about the inclusion of Spider-Man into Captain America: Civil War. If you haven’t seen the movie, you may want to bookmark this page for later!
Marvel and Sony struck a deal that brought the web-slinger home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the characters first appearance came this weekend in the new Captain America film. Since the announcement came that the movie would be adapting the Civil War storyline from the comics, comic book fans knew that Spider-Man would need to be there to be a faithful adaptation. If you’ve seen the movie already, you know that one of the most iconic scenes from the comic book never happened. Spider-Man is a relative unknown in this universe right now, and thus he does not remove his mask and show the world who he really is when he signs up with Iron Man.
So was Spider-Man really necessary? Sure, he was incredible to watch; his banter was on point, they made him stronger than almost every other Avenger minus Vision, and he’s connected himself firmly into the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean the movie benefited from having him.
Peter Parker’s appearance is kept short and mostly exists just to have him there. Nothing about him being part of the movie felt organic. He hasn’t been an Avenger in the movies yet, siding with Iron Man means he would have had to sign the Sokovia Accords (thus anyone with internet could probably look up who he really is), and if Tony really wanted to bring in some muscle, there are now potentially thousands of Inhumans running around that certainly could have been a better first pick than this child.
What do you think? Did Spider-Man’s appearance work for you, or did you feel like he was there just to please the fans?
