I can’t describe to you how much I love this book. There are no frills and big epic storylines, it is just a lonely guy and a robot and adjusting to life post hacking your robot and making her sentient. Last issue was fun, we got to see Ada trying food and saw her general reactions to everyday experiences, it was really quite charming. It also had a regular pace about it until the usual pause at the end of each book with its usual cliff-hanger and last months was particularly shocking.
This issue picks up exactly where we left off with Ada having been spotted in the garden by Alex’s neighbour. This part of the book was too rushed in my opinion which is a first for Alex & Ada as the pacing of the book has been so in tune with both the narrative and the overall look of the book, I really felt this segment could have been longer. Apart from that I loved the rest of the book, the care Alex has for Ada is really noticeable in this issue and it really feels like a build up to a romantic drama while all the time there is this underlying feeling that we are not getting the full story of what these robots are actually about. After a somewhat unfriendly conversation between Alex and his neighbour it is decided that if Ada wishes to go out and about she must have some new clothes, bring on the pretty woman, romantic comedy, trying-on-clothes segment which was very nice and light-hearted and allowed the story to progress slightly though didn’t add too much to the overall feel of the book.
The final act of the issue is where the pace picks up nicely and leads us to the cliff-hanger of this month’s issue. Alex and Ada are invited to dinner with Alex’s grandmother and her robot, Daniel, and upon arrival we are treated to a great few panels where Ada and Daniel meet which I truly laughed out loud. The detail of the art in the second to last panel of the page is a real credit to the art team as the emotions of these characters play a huge part in the overall narrative of this book and this detail along with the dialogue is the reason I did laugh so hard. There are some nice reveals during the meal but upon conclusion of the meal we have the cliff-hanger we are always waiting for at the end of the issue, and this one was a good one and changes the game completely which makes me excited to see what direction the creative team take from here.
If you are not reading this book you should definitely start. I recommend picking up the first trade which comes out next month and then catching up with the issues that have been releases since then. The consistency of this series has been excellent, the art, narrative, and dialogue make each issue a very enjoyable read and #7 is no different.
