We’ve previously reviewed one of the Bob’s Burgers comics and this Free Comic Book Day issue serves as a sort of Best Of to entice people into picking up the previous issues or the new trade of collected issues.

The Bob’s Burgers comics all feature small shorts, usually from the point of view of one of the kids, with fun little tidbits breaking them up such as Burger of the Day ideas. This collection is no different and I’m happy to say that they chose some of the funnier moments from the comics to showcase here. In fact, my favorite short of the entire run is the very first one presented, which means that they aren’t skimping on content.

And let’s be honest here, this comic is for fans of the TV show and no one else. The humor and art is spot on, certain plots have details ripped straight from episodes, and there’s some fun little references that you’d only get if you did watch the show. By being exclusively for existing fans, this is one of the best comic series based around an already existing franchise and fans will be more than pleased.

Highlights of this issue include a short about Tina’s life as a horse (who still attends school and has a human family), Louise’s hunt for a fellow library book defacer, and Gene’s adventures as a frog dad. They’re all wonderfully presented and completely nail each character. It’s a tremendously fun series and makes for a great introduction to the entire run of comics.

This is one of the issues that I consider a must if you’re a fan of the show. It’s a fun, light read with plenty of laughs that will almost certainly have you running out to pick up the rest of the issues or even the trade. If you’re not a fan of the show, feel free to skip it. They aren’t trying to win over new fans but it strengthens the series for those who just can’t get enough of this wacky burger family.

Free Comic Book Day takes place Saturday May 2nd at participating stores. For more information about Free Comic Book Day and a list of stores participating in events, go to FreeComicBookDay.com.
