I Hate Fairyland #3 Review

*SPOILER WARNING sort of. Because this is a comedy comic, talking about the plot means talking about some jokes. So if you don’t want to know any of that, then just go buy it already*

So I Hate Fairyland is showing two running jokes now: The first is that Gertrude always kills the narrator of the story, and as of Issue 3, it’s in the first page. She’s moving on up folks! The second is that the cliffhanger ending from last issue is resolved mostly off screen, which means all those zombie fauns from last time are dead now.

I’m not mad about that or anything; it’s just a cheap way to start this review. Introductions are hard.

So Gertrude is still on her quest for the key to leave Fairyland, and Larry is still along for the ride. Nothing’s changed there, other than the things Gert is killing. It’s all fun and lively, and I’m so happy this comic is part of my life.

What has changed is our…protagonist?’s plan. Queen Claudia is at her wits end because the rules of Fairyland state that she cannot harm the chosen human searching for the key, even if that human is a foul-mouthed drunken little girl with a giant battle axe and a pocket dragon. It’s a problem.

So our very respected, very not-evil queen has decided to let another little girl into Fairyland. If she gets the key first, then Gertrude is no longer the chosen human but another citizen and ripe for capital punishment.

It’s a pretty sound idea, and it all gets even better when Gert and the new little girl, Happy from Joyville WI (I don’t think that’s a real place because WI is much too cold for joy), finally meet each other. I can’t say why because spoilers.

Really, I can’t say a lot of things about this comic that I want to because spoilers. There are so many jokes that land again, so many wonderful little things to talk about, but I want you to experience them yourself. It makes reviewing this one hard, but it also kinda makes reviewing this one easy since I can be vague and lazy.

Hooray for vague and lazy!

Since my praise for the artwork hasn’t changed at all since my last review, I’m just going to copy/paste what I wrote last time: “Last issue I praised Mr. Beaulieu’s coloring job, and yeah, I’ll do that again here. The comic looks fantastic. Everything that worked in the first issue is back, and that’s about all there is to it.”

Wow, that was easy.

Ah hell, I’m gonna trifecta this comic and give it another 9.5. It put me in an insanely good mood.
