Lobster Johnson: Metal Monster of Midtown #1 Review

Written by: Mike Mignola & John Arcudi

Art by: Tonci Zonjic

Publisher: Dark Horse

Lobster Johnson is back and he’s taking on some enormous metal monsters hitting the streets. This story, written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi pits the titular hero against an unknown enemy terrorizing the city with even more unknown intentions. After attacking a bank, it’s discovered the monsters haven’t even stolen cash! So why are they doing this? Who is going to save the day? And further more, who is going to save The Lobster!?

Artistically this first issue is what you may expect from a Lobster Johnson tale, and that’s not a disappointment. Visually, it has a feel of cartoons from the 90s, which is a welcome sight to some. Adding in a dash of what may be steampunk-ness to the storyline with the Metal Monsters, this story is definitely one for fans to check out and see what happens.

Throughout issue #1, you get a sense that something or someone is leading these metal monsters on their terror attacks and you’re left questioning the motives of it all. The story does a great job of upping the level of mystery so that you are going to want to pick up the next two issues. Though Lobster Johnson is a character spun off from Hellboy, this story doesn’t feel connected to the source material all that much. This one really feels like a tale all its own, and that’s not a bad thing. Whether the next two issues find a way to fold in characters from the extensive cast of Hellboy remains to be seen, but one can hope that this story stays focused on the titular hero.

Though only a 3 part series, Dark Horse fans are likely familiar with the character and thus this is a miniseries you have to pick up. Check it out in print or on digital to make sure you see this one through to the end!
