Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #12 Review

After the explosive ending to last month’s issue, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #12 is tasked with continuing that exciting story while simultaneously explaining what in the Sam Hill is going on here. Kyle Higgins completely shook up the series with his big reveal last issue and has way too many questions to answer. Who is Lord Drakkon? How did he gain power? How much bleach does he use keeping that suit white in a dirty world? Thankfully, Higgins does a solid job providing just enough information to keep you going throughout this
depressing fun new world.
As the issue kicks off, Lord Drakkon is in complete control. Both Billy and Tommy are in grave danger, and there doesn’t seem to be any glimpse of hope for the heroes. Luckily, outside forces intervene and kick off a mini battle that is both unexpected and glorious.
Narrowly avoiding death or imprisonment, Billy and Tommy are whisked away to relative safety, where they finally get some form of a backstory. And this, dear friends, is where the strength of issue #12 lies. The entire history of this other world is quite interesting to read about, despite the fact that it’s a little shocking at times. Lord Drakkon’s ascension to evil overlord wasn’t a simple coronation; he had to meet the forces of Good on the battlefield and conduct a bloody campaign. The depiction of these events is what keeps you moving through the issue. It also helps that Hendry Prasetya has a few surprises for eagle-eyed fans.
Of course, not the entire issue is dedicated to hearing about Lord Drakkon’s rise to power. There are actually a couple other stories taking place, albeit in a more reduced manner. It’s easy to forget that there is an entire world searching for the missing Power Rangers, including the rest of the team. This storyline has been brief throughout this comic’s run, but it’s still very important. Unfortunately, this story’s appearance is much too brief.
Finally, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #12 also briefly touches upon Rita Repulsa and her band of villains, who are trying to recapture the world. Despite becoming more of an afterthought in this series, Rita, Goldar, and the rest are dangerous foes with horrifying plans for Angel Grove. Granted, these plans aren’t entirely revealed in the very short appearance, but a massive battle appears to be on the horizon.
Considering that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11 was a fairly shocking issue, it’s only expected that the follow up would face a tall task in explaining everything while continuing the enjoyable story. And for the most part, issue #12 mostly sticks the landing. The story surrounding Tommy, Billy, and the mysterious saber is quite fascinating, and it appears to be headed toward a very exciting conclusion. The moment alone with the Red Ranger’s helmet was worth the price of admission. It’s only too bad that there aren’t more pages dedicated to Goldar’s side of events and Rita’s continuing schemes.
