Hey, you know what we haven’t had in awhile? A four-parter My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic series. You know what Issue #34 feels like? The beginning of a four-parter MLP:FiM comic series. I’m not saying that it is, because I honestly have no idea, but given what happens and how it ends, I really don’t see this one wrapping up in one more issue.
Let us rejoice!
MLP:FiM #34 kicks off with some ominous wording about the cold wastes beyond the Crystal Empire as a lone, hooded pony makes her way to civilization. Her stops along the way put her into contact with some of Equestria’s less famous villains, such as Iron Will and the Flimflam Brothers. They’re all down on their luck, and this mysterious pony is promising both help and revenge.
Meanwhile, the main six are off at the Crystal Empire preparing some kind of festival because that’s what Twilight Sparkle was born to do.
The MLP:FiM comics are fun in that you never really know what to expect. The last big battle we had involved evil apples from outer space. It was bizarre and stupid and ridiculously fun, but Issue 34’s big battle isn’t any of those things. It’s tense, it’s on point, and … well, okay, it’s pretty fun too. It’s a pony comic though, and they’re usually pretty fun.
To be honest, there’s not a lot here for me to talk about. The issue really is a quick setup and then a battle that spans the rest of it, and going into further detail would spoil the end. I can say that the first two pages of spooky exposition aren’t well written, which is a shame, but that’s the only real fault here. Everything else is fairly solid (though perhaps a little standard if I’m being honest) with some quality gags, a great Dirty Harry reference, and top-notch visuals.
Basically, this is an MLP:FiM comic.
