Let’s just skip the normal introduction and jump right into the, Oh my gosh it’s a Rarity and Gilda comic! Also, Oh my gosh, the artwork is by Jay Fosgitt! We’ve got a pairing I’ve never seen before and we are guaranteed adorable artwork. Nothing else matters.

Well, okay, that’s not entirely true, because while My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Friends Forever #24 is certainly adorable and fun as hell, it’s not exactly perfect. It is good though! So you know, keep reading for good vibes and such.

Once upon a time in Equestria, Rarity was working in her shop when Gilda the griffin showed up out of the blue. Rarity was very confused, and Gilda was a little nervous, but eventually the now-reformed griffin asked our fabulous hero if she could make her sports team a set of uniforms. They were going to be in a playoff game!

That’s our premise. It’s actually fairly unique to this franchise, all things considered. I’ve read a ton of MLP:FiM:FF comics, and this is the first time I’ve seen sports come up. I quite like it too. It helps build up the world in all kinds of fun ways, first in that the different countries actually have sporting events and compete with each other and…well, that’s about it. But that’s really two things in one sentence, so it counts as more than one thing.

Shut up.

I suppose the problem is the same kind of problem we find it most of the MLP:FiM:FF comics: the main conflict and resolution aren’t exactly breaking any molds. In this case, the coach of the new team is a rather nasty piece of work but no one wants to confront him. Queue Rarity and her pony ways to set some things straight!

Still, that’s not the worst thing in the world. I’ve always championed the idea that a generic plotline told well is still worthwhile, and in the case of Issue 24 here, it’s done well. The comic is cute and fun, it hits the story beats it needs to hit in the right ways, and it concludes in a logical manor.

There are also a few little references to outside things as per most MLP comics. Award-winning? No. Fun? Yes. If you like your ponies extra cute, this one is worth picking up.

Because oh my gosh, Jay Fosgitt’s rendition of Gilda is wonderful.
