Dark Horse appears to be taking inspiration from the likes of Marvel and DC with their Fire and Stone shared universe that combines the lore from Aliens, Predator, Aliens vs. Predator, and Prometheus. The events from one series directly affect the events of the others, creating an entry barrier that, in the case of Issue 1 of Aliens vs. Predator: Fire and Stone, is thankfully surpassed by reading the comic twice.
Though you’ll want to read it twice anyways, because it’s really, really good.
My favorite thing about the AvP series as a whole is the absolute chaos it brings to the table, especially in the video games. When you mix the killing capabilities of humans, Xenomorphs, and Predators, you’re in for a wild ride of slaughter and tension. Issue 1 of AvP:FaS takes this trend, grins like a madman, and runs wild with it for its full 24 pages, and it ends with the promise of more to come.
The issue starts with what’s left of what appear to be four vessels wracked by some kind of carnage from Issue 4 of Prometheus: Fire and Stone, all fleeing LV223. Something horrific went down, and now it’s time to pick up what’s left and return home. Of course, when you’re dealing with anything Aliens, that’s not so easy.
Just as someone named Francis is being accused of (and threatened with) terrible crimes, an insane android that’s been mixed with biomechanical Engineer technology shows up. He claims to be turning into a human. He’s also brought a small army of Xenomrophs with him.
A group of Predators seeking more prey to hunt also show up around this time.
Hello Chaos, how are you today? Jittery and hungry for slaughter? Good. Very good. That’s how I like you.
The entire story is packed with an art style that’s a gorgeous blend of watercolor and pastel. Everything looks so vibrant! The Xenomorphs are creepy, the crazy half-android named Elden is horrific looking, especially when he smiles, and watching them all kill and maim is absolutely fun.
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into AvP:FaS Issue 1, but I was treated to one amazing ride, and I can’t wait for more.
