All-New Captain America coming this Fall!

Marvel Comics has announced via “The Colbert Report” that Captain America will be indeed, hanging up his shield. After rigorous battles in his ongoing series, Steve Rogers is left aged and depleted of the super-soldier serum. But Captain America can never die, so who will pick up the mantle? Why, it’s none other than his longtime partner, the Falcon!

Starting this fall, Sam Wilson will be the All-New Captain America. The new series will be penned by current Captain America writer Rick Remender, who has been writing the title since the start of Marvel NOW! nearly two years ago. Joining him will be artist Stuart Immonen, currently doing the art on All-New X-Men. This will be the first time that Remender and Immonen have teamed, though both have been top talents at Marvel for a number of years.

Remender has stated that Steve Rogers will still be involved in the book, serving as a support role and adviser to Sam Wilson. Wilson does not have the super-soldier serum flowing through his body and as such will largely rely on his powers of flight, which he will maintain. Joining him into battle will be the new Nomad, Ian, who readers will remember from the “Dimension Z” storyline that Remender began his run on Captain America with.

How this change will impact Falcon’s role in the Avengers and future Marvel projects remains to be seen, though it can be expected that he will be leaving the Mighty Avengers title in favor of a starring role in Hickman’s title. Falcon was previously thought to be taking up the mantle of Captain America when Marvel previewed the Avengers “Time Runs Out” storyline, which shows the Avengers as they will be in a few months.
