Amazing X-Men #9 Review

Written by: Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost

Art by: Carlo Barberi

Publisher: Marvel

I sort of slated Kyle and Yost first issue last month of this book. I felt it wasn’t interesting and some of the reasoning behind the storyline such as Storm scared that Logan is out all by himself didn’t make any sense. But I have to say that they really turned it around for me in this issue.

Part 2 of the Wendigo War or World War Wendigo, to be precise, was a really fun issue. A brief overview of the issue is that the X-Men catch up with Logan, and want to help him out in his difficult situation, but before they get there Puck & Talisman have already turned up and things are going ok. What happens by the end of the issue I won’t spoil but it was truly shocking and a great cliffhanger.

This issue the writers really shone with great dialogue and character interaction. Some of the conversations between the X-Men really made me laugh especially on the plane with the toilet scenario. It is just humour done well, and it was something that I felt was lacking in their first issue last month as it is something we have come to expect with Kyle and Yost’s X-Men books and this was a great return to form.

One of the elements I was worried about for this issue was that Ed McGuinness has now left the book and is now replaced by Carlo Barberi. There is no denying that McGuinness draws the X-Men fantastically, but I got to give it to Barberi, this issue the art was fantastic and I am hoping he stays on the book as it really felt like the writing was in tune with the art, the characters sounded and looked fun when they were meant to be, and when it was time to be serious, Barberi was able to change his style to fit that.  I think it also helped that Rachelle Rosenberg is still on the colours because this made it a seamless transition from last issue.

World War Wendigo got off to a rocky start last month but really crawled itself back and this month’s issue was really good fun. If Kyle and Yost can keep making issues like this then I truly believe that this could end up being another classic run of theirs on an X-Men title.
