Ant-Man

A series that completely caught me off guard and really rejuvenated my love of Marvel comics. I expected just a cheap tie in series to cash in on the movie, but Nick Spencer really ran with the character and made Scott Lang into the sort of hero he could always be.
It’s very much set in the modern marvel model with lots of comedy and relatable mundane life situations, however it combines it with an old-school Saturday morning cartoon-esque approach to make it feel completely new and fresh. The art of Ramon Rosanas really gives the book a lot of this charm, he’s incredibly consistent and helps nails the humor that makes the book so special.
A lot of what makes the series so good is the heart Spencer imbues it with. Lang’s struggles with his daughter Casey really pull at the heartstrings, making even the smallest of his action feel massively heroic. The supporting cast have really managed to come into their own without stealing the spotlight from Scott. Spencer’s experience with Superhero Foes of Spider-Man really help him write likeable villains you can root for as well as filling the book with loveable misfits.
An easy book to miss given Marvel’s desire to constantly relaunch series and focus of world smashing events, but this is one you certainly need to spend some time with.
