This comic is crazy, that’s the first thing that comes to mind. Let’s start with the title, “Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman – Dark New Day”, there is a ludicrous amount of words in this title. This title is almost too descriptive, I didn’t know the correct place for the commas and hyphens either, was it Cabra Cini – Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman – Dark New Day, or was it Cabra Cini – Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman, Dark New Day? But despite the mild annoyance the title caused, this comic is actually pretty good.
We’ll start with the cover, this cover is one of my main issues with this book (except for the title, of course.) This cover is horrible, it’s a poor representation of the great art inside the book and it really put me off it initially. The only truly redeeming factor of this cover is the font used for Cabra Cini. Luckily, inside the book there are small previews of the future covers, and they are nowhere near as bad as this.
We open the book to a story called “Voodoo Trespass”, this story is great. Whilst it goes a bit over the top on the expository dialogue, the art is beautiful and fits the story perfectly, with just the right amount of eccentricity. The fight scenes flow well and whilst the story can get confusing at points with the sudden flashback, it all still makes sense.
There is however, one issue I have with the dialogue. During one fight scene, Cabra refers to Mr Mash-Up as “Milky Joe”.
I only really know one Milky Joe.
I honestly don’t feel like a Mighty Boosh reference fits in well with this story at all, and it made that conversation seem a lot more forced and unnatural, it really seemed like a bad attempt at recreating Peter Parker. Other than that one small gripe, the dialogue is good but it needs to tone down the exposition, at one point it became ridiculously over the top and just ruined the flow for that page.
One concept of this story I truly love is the new dimension they created, the Infinity. While the name lacks creativity, this seems like a plot point that can be expanded on really well and creatively and could make quite a good series on it’s own.
The main story is only 10 pages long, and everything after that is a preview for the new Cabra Cini mini-series coming out soon, and the art for that looks amazing. I will definitely buy this series, and hopefully you will too.
I would recommend this to a friend for sure. Know what makes this all better? Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman – Dark New Day is out now and available for free here and here!
