Captain America #23 Review

Written by: Rick Remender

Art by: Carlos Pacheco & Mariano Taibo

Publisher: Marvel

Does anybody else really want a Remender Iron Man book? Cos I really do, but more of that later.

What an issue! I have been loving this Captain America run since the start of this series, but this is by far my favourite issue of it so far. It had everything a comic book should, action, witty dialogue, great art, story progression, and a dramatic conclusion. The only thing that this book is lacking at the moment is a Captain America. But that doesn’t take anything away to what a wonderful past couple of issues this series has had to offer.

It has been really been fun to see the worthwhile investment from the start of the series beginning to pay off, with many loose ends from the Dimension Z arc being reconciled now. All the questions left unanswered, with the exception of the state of Zola, have now come into play at this point in the series and it is really driving towards a dramatic end.

As mentioned above, Remender does an excellent job at writing Tony Stark, and it really excites me that we are going to be seeing more of this hopefully in the upcoming Axis event. Not only Tony Stark, but because of his work on Uncanny Avengers, Remender really handles the huge roster of characters in this issue effortlessly, well it definitely appears that way. Each individual character has a chance to shine and their personalities are depicted excellently, especially Sam Wilson, which bodes well for the upcoming storylines.

The art in this book will not be for everyone, but I really liked it. Each character looked great, the fighting sequences had some great motion, and the large scale visuals such as the Avengers Mansion or the city scope looked excellent and really took this excellent script and showcased it to its full potential.

With the shock last page there really is a lot of this story left to find out and I can’t wait for the rest of the journey that Remender is going to take us on. I really recommend reading this series right now however this is definitely not a jumping on point. In fact, to get the most of this series I really recommend going back to Issue 1 and starting from scratch, because though there might be a slightly less exciting issue or two within the past 23 issues, the payoffs that are happening at the moment make this run on Captain America one of the strongest series in Marvel today and is becoming something of a modern classic.
