In a strange turn of events, Community has been renewed for a sixth season. However, this season will debut on Yahoo as part of a new plan to create original comedies.
The deal was closed today, which was actually the final day that the Community stars were under contract. The main cast will be part of the new season, with the exception of Donald Glover and Jonathan Banks. Dan Harmon is also returning for the sixth season, and he showed his excitement in a statement.
“I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” Harmon said. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Look out, ‘Bang Bus!”
The only other question about Community’s resurrection is “How does this affect ‘Six Seasons and a Movie?'” This phrase started out as a joke during the second season, but it quickly turned into a unifying theme for Community fans. We will have to see how the sixth season is received on the new, digital platform.
