DC Comics Unveils New Payment Plan for Comic Creators

DC Comics has created a new payment plan for its creators that will be implemented beginning July 1.

This payment plan covers royalties and the method with which the comic creators receive their payments. The royalties—known as participations—are now based off net revenue from various retail platforms instead of the cover price of the individual comics.

DC co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee unveiled this new plan in an email to comic creators. The email specified the changes in payment plans, but it also introduced new payment methods. The comic creators based in the United States will now be paid via direct deposit.

However, the most important part of the email was the addition of Color Artists to the payment plan. The colorists will now be eligible to receive royalties and cover credit for the work they provide. The following is a brief passage from the email detailing the colorists’ involvement in the new payment plan:

“We are pleased to announce the very welcome addition of Color Artists to the participations pool. Color Artists will receive moving forward cover credit for their work alongside Writers, Pencilers, and Inkers. In addition, Digital First talent will now be eligible to receive additional compensation and share financially in the success of their books.”
