External Hard Drive Support, Real Names, and More in June Xbox One Update

Major Nelson has posted the features coming to the Xbox One in June’s system update.  There are some pretty major additions coming to Xbox One owners in the way of features such as external hard drive support and real names for friends.  In today’s day-one-digital world, the 500GB hard drive that comes with the Xbox One is looking smaller and smaller; with game install sizes climbing well past 50Gb each it merely takes a handful of games to start pushing the limits of the seemingly insufficient storage space.  This will change with the feature that alleviates gamers’ concerns about having to pick and choose which games they keep on their hard drive going forward.  Players can now use not one, but TWO external hard drives to store entire games and saves.  This feature is said to make it quicker and easier than ever to allow gamers to share games and play together without having to wait for download and install times.

Another feature being added to the Xbox One is the addition of real names to friends lists.  This is a welcome feature for many gamers that have growing lists of friends and followers as the friends cap has been lifted from 100 to 1000 friends and virtually unlimited followers.  It doesn’t take long to get a daunting pile of Gamertags to flip through to find that new friend you just made during a match of Titanfall.  There are several other additions to this update, to include using SmartGlass to access the full OneGuid and Universal Remote Control features, Pin Reordering, as well as OneGuide support in much of Europe.

Overall these features continue to bring the Xbox One in line with the initially proposed vision of what gamers can do with their new console.  Anticipated upcoming features for future updates include pre-loading digital copies of upcoming games as well as possibly sharing digital copies of games with friends.
