Hi Everyone! I’m going to try something a little different here. I’m now going to organize the news by systems or games related to those platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and 3rd Party/Misc.). Hopefully it’ll be better for you to navigate the post. Today we have a lot of Final Fantasy XII Info (#2 and #3), some Xbox One X benchmarks from Digital Foundry (#6), and Assassin’s Creed is coming to Netflix as an anime series (#12). Enjoy!
PlayStation
1- Project Re Fantasy (Atlus) kind of confirmed for PS4 (shocking news) by job listing (Source: NeoGAF user DKHF)
2- Playstation EU: Trophies will now sync much quicker on your PS4… Yay??
3- Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age changes and additions: what’s new in this Ivalice remaster? (Source: RPG Site, Adam Vitale)
4- The making of Final Fantasy 12 (Source: Polygon, Jeremy Parish)
Controversy trails behind the Final Fantasy series with each new release. From cries of betrayal when Final Fantasy 7 jumped ship to PlayStation to frustration over the story changes Final Fantasy 15 underwent during its tortuous 10-year development process, there’s simply no such thing as an easy birth when it comes to Square Enix’s biggest franchise.
FF12 was meant to be the safe game, the comfortable fan-fodder. Like with the charming Final Fantasy 9, the idea behind FF12 was to double down on series traditions and easy wins. Its creative team brought together Yasumi Matsuno, the visionary writer and director responsible for Final Fantasy Tactics, and Hiroyuki Ito, the systems designer who created the series’ two defining play mechanics: The Active-Time Battle system and the flexible Job class system.
5- Welcome to RPCS3 – The PlayStation 3 Emulator
*Note – Emulators are in the morally gray area of the videogame industry. Completely ripping off a system to play games for free is totally illegal and should not be used if you can easily access the game through other medium. With that being said, emulators are the definitive way to preserve video game history. Some games get delisted or taken off shelves, and the only way to play them is either collecting from pawn shops or scalpers. I just think it is really neat to see from a technological standpoint they are able to do this.
Xbox
6- Digital Foundry: Microsoft’s Xbox One X Benchmarks Revealed: 4K vs 900p/1080p + Back-Compat!
7- Frank O’ Connor tweeted about maybe some more Halo news this week.
Nintendo
8- Fire Emblem Warriors – Warriors’ Awakening (Nintendo Switch)
Four new characters confirmed: Frederick, Lucina, male Robin, and Lissa.
9- Official transcription of the Nintendo Q&A Shareholder meeting (long and boring so I am going to hit the main points)
-Nintendo knows smaller indy teams are extremely popular so they are making it easier for them to publish on Nintendo platforms (Mainly the Switch)
-With the 3DS family having 66 million units sold, Nintendo is continuing to provide software for this fiscal year and support for the platform. They are hinting at some games to be both on 3DS and Switch (maybe crossplay).
-Nintendo will likely develop more projects like 1, 2, Switch. Shareholders are really interested in games that can tap into a wider audience (ugh).
-Nintendo “thinking about a lot of different ways to make use of Virtual Console titles”
-Nintendo is learning a lot from the mobile market and their different techniques for paying for content. Animal Crossing is their next IP for mobile. They will take what they learned based on the target audience and use that as their payment model.
