3- ‘Zelda,’ ‘Overwatch’ and the failure to represent Middle Eastern and South Asian identities in games (Source: Mic, Rye Khosravi, credit to NeoGAF user, Poetic.Injustice)

Video games often blur the lines between Middle Eastern and South Asian countries until characters are nothing but vague brown stereotypes. It’s a real issue, not just because it does a disservice to the complex people and stories from this part of the world, but because it reinforces a simplistic understanding of their cultures, which can create real-life problems.

16- “We quit our jobs, remortgaged our houses” – how relentless passion made Cuphead a reality (Source: Gamesradar, Alex Gilyadov).

After multiple delays, many tradeshow appearances, and plenty of opinionated feedback… Cuphead will finally release on September 29. It’s been a long, hard road to get here for StudioMDHR Entertainment and its captivating 1930s cartoon platformer. Cuphead was unveiled at E3 2014 and playable a year later at E3 2015. Its bold 2D art style, which recalls classic, mid-20th century animations, and engaging, tough boss battles catapulted Cuphead to everyone’s most anticipated list. But, after it was quickly made known the game only contained boss fights with barely any platforming levels linking those battles together, people grew disappointed. The excitement for Cuphead died down…

Just another example how much pressure indie devs go through.

It’s not that surprising, then, to read that during today’s Nintendo’s 77th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders investors asked Nintendo executives whether they planned to create games for PC since they are already on two-thirds of the gaming market (console and mobile).
