Gotham “Mommy’s Little Monster” Review

That’s two in a row! Gotham continues its strong episode run with “Mommy’s Little Monster” Gordon struggles with the realization that the Mayor may be an evil psychopath while Bullock wants to buy a cat. Bruce gets sucked deeper and deeper into Galvan’s world with the help of Silver St Cloud. Penguin has nothing left to lose after losing his mother and Butch turning on him. More nameless police officers die, also Riddler is Nuts and its great!
You’d be amazed how many villains run for Mayor in Gotham. It happens a lot. And in almost every incarnation. Penguin Ran for Mayor in the 60’s Batman show. Joker ran in the comics, and now Glavan plans to take Marshall law over this terrorized city. And he’s doing a pretty good job of it. Although when Gordon laid out his evil plan it did make me wonder how on earth is he getting away with all this. He hasn’t hidden it from Silver or even the various tortures he’s pushed onto his side. You would think someone would slip up at some point. But I digress this episode had two standouts, and that was Penguin and Riddler.

“Harvey is thinking about getting a cat.”

Penguin being the first. His final moments with his mother were very touching. We never really got to know her all that much, but we knew she loved her son very much. And as a fellow Mommas boy I could sympathize with him at that moment. But then to follow it up with the threats to Galavan. “You don’t have the stomach to kill me yourself!” and “No wonder your family was run out of town, You come from a long line of Cowards!” great moments and even better lines. his promise of killing Galavan and then cutting his throat was just icing on the cake.
Then comes Nigma, now he still has absolutely no connection to the overall plot it seems I don’t even think he knows Galavan, but he was just so awesome and creepy this week. As I’ve said before Riddler is my Favorite Batman villain and seeing him argue with himself and then realize that his other half his giving him these riddles to find Ms. Kringles missing body is just awesome. I can already see the Villain that he will become and why he does what he does. It’s also the first time I’ve ever felt tension for Nigma when he was almost caught by Leslee; I felt a sense of dread because I didn’t want Nigma to get caught yet. Maybe that says more about me than him but it was also because if Leslee had found out what he was doing who knows maybe he would have hurt her too.

“So who wants to cosplay as me?”

Bruce, Silver, and Selina all had an incredibly awkward lunch. But it got to show us how manipulative and cunning Silver is while also showing us how naive and unaware Bruce still is. Batman would know immediately that something is up with her and Galavan but he has lived his entire life in that weird Living room that he never leaves. I do question why Selina would think what she did was a good idea, trying to push Silver away only seems like a sure fire way to also push away Bruce. He’s a teenage boy; he’s going to choose the pretty blonde girl showing him attention over the mean dirty girl who shows no emotion. she’s smarter than that.
Another tiny annoyance was the fact that just last week Gordon fell all in with Galavan and said he will endorse him but then like the flip of a switch Gordon immediately doesn’t trust him, it seems like an odd choice to simply put him in Galvan’s pocket to then suddenly make him question his motives. speaking of questionable, we got to see the insanely young attorney Harvey Dent still adding nothing of significance to the show.
but those small quibbles aside I really enjoyed this week’s Gotham, mostly because of the villains. Riddler and Penguin are the highlight of this week and to end the episode on Riddler about to surgically cut up his dead girlfriend with a smile on his face is just about as twisted as it can get for him. as we all know he certainly doesn’t come back from this but it will be interesting to see if he has any remorse in the future or even more riddles from his other self.
