Superhero stories are great, but their worlds are a little too simple for my liking. Most modern superheroes have no family strife or outside influences messing with their lives. Well, Insufferable is a vastly different story. This comic, written by Mark Waid, follows a former superhero team long after their productive years are over. This team also happens to consist of a father and his bitter son that broke up after the mother passed away. Basically, it’s like Batman if Robin grew up to be an ungrateful jerk that hated Bruce Wayne and loved social media.
On the outside, Insufferable appears to be a very serious comic, but the reality is slightly different. Yes, villains do murder women and children, but Waid keeps some of the moments lighter by adding in jokes about Twitter and random other Internet themes. These moments definitely help distract from the dead children and rapists.
Insufferable could be harder to get into if you don’t care for whiny brats, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Waid’s story is crazy interesting, and almost every moment is unexpected. I was never able to accurately predict what happened during my time reading the series.
