Miami Vice Remix #3 – Review

Written by: Joe Casey

Art by: Jim Mahfood

Publisher: Lion Force Comics and IDW

After a successful second issue, Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood are returning for Miami Vice Remix #3. This issue ramps up the intensity as detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs try to find the parties responsible for overpowering Miami with a crazy, new drug. The different crime lords have begun fighting over the different portions of Miami while the drug creates havoc. While Miami Vice Remix #3 isn’t as spectacular as the second issue, it still includes the entertaining aspects and interesting story that make the comic worth reading.

Obviously, Miami Vice Remix #2 ended in a very rough way for Detective Crockett as an angry man was mercilessly beating him because of a death. As it turns out, the dead man was actually Crockett’s former partner who was blown up by a car bomb. Apparently, this partner’s family blamed Crockett for the death and decided that he needed to die a horrible death. However, this death would prematurely end an entertaining comic, so Crockett’s pet alligator Elvis came to the rescue.

While Crockett was dealing with this angry family member, Tubbs was still attempting to figure out why this new drug, dubbed Miami Bath Salts, was causing drug users to turn into cannibalistic zombies. Unfortunately, the only way to discover more about this drug was to ingest a small portion of it and witness the results. Tubbs took this challenge, but he made a mistake by taking the drug right before Crockett came to take him on an undercover operation. This mistake led to a scarier situation at a potential drug deal, but the moment was still a fun part of the issue.

As mentioned earlier, Miami Vice Remix #3 wasn’t as entertaining as issue #2, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The second issue of Casey and Mahfood’s comic was setting up the partnership and the bigger world in general. Plus, the second issue had the intense battle on the turnpike. However, the third issue still had some entertaining moments throughout the story. For example, the entire undercover meeting with Luis Mendez was interesting because Crockett was trying to maintain a cover identity while reining in Tubbs before anything bad happened. This whole situation was a mess, and it was great.

Miami Vice Remix continues to be an entertaining series, complete with unique art and a great story. Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood are making gold every issue, and they need to continue working together.
