Most of the comics that I include in this list have two things in common—a unique art style and some humor. Well, Miami Vice Remix is the perfect way to start the list because it’s one of the most visually appealing series of 2015. Jim Mahfood uses an art style that includes very sharp angles and oddly shaped characters. Some people find this style off-putting, but I personally think that it fits with the concept and Joe Casey’s story. Miami Vice was a slightly weird TV show, and the comic series just ups the ante. Yes, drugs and undercover cops are the main focus of the show, but Remix also cannibalistic criminals and pet alligators.
Miami Vice Remix wouldn’t be as strong of a series if not for the relationship of Crockett and Tubbs. Casey partially recreates the partnership made famous by Miami Vice, but he also mixes in some more violent tendencies. Crockett and Tubbs are always at each other’s throats, even when in the midst of battle.
Miami Vice Remix is a strangely psychedelic comic, but that could be mostly attributed to the art. Either way, this series is a fun take on the classic TV show that doesn’t feel like a retread or straight-up adaptation.
