Hot on the heels of casting its main protagonist, James Gordon, casting has just been unveiled for a multitude of other characters based out of Gotham City!
First up is the notorious villain known as The Penguin, who will be played by Robin Lord Taylor. However, this isn’t the penguin that we’re used to. The Hollywood Reporter defines him as “a low level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney.” This hints at a less established Penguin, and means that he will likely be a recurring character, as we track his progression.
The next character to be cast is the famous Wayne family butler, Alfred Pennyworth. The role will be taken on by Sean Pertwee, and The Hollywood Reporter describes Alfred as “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London who has loyally served the Wayne family.” This definitely seems like the showrunners are drawing on Batman: Earth One for inspiration, in terms of Alfred’s character.
In addition to these two, Zabryna Guevara has been cast in the role of Captain (Sarah?) Essen. She will be “Gordon’s boss… who balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill.”
Finally, Erin Richards is set to play Barbara Kean, a doctor who is engaged to the young Jim Gordon. The Hollywood Reporter says this of her character: “She’s joyful but with an edge of vulnerability who stands by her future husband.”
