Mythic #1 reads like a more mature version of Ghostbusters. It’s got a great blend of humor and the supernatural that makes it an absolute joy. This first issue takes a little while to kick into gear, but once it does, it’s hard to put it down.
For those who don’t know, the book takes place in an alternate universe in which Magic keeps the world going and science is the method by which the uneducated masses explain the world to themselves. It kind of flips the widely-accepted paradigm on its head–and writer Phil Hester even tosses in the line “science is the opiate of the masses.” It’s actually pretty great. This issue (and, I would assume, the entire first arc) is centered around Mythic Lore Services attempting to solve a drought. Yes, this book is about an organization called Mythic Lore Services.
The book opens up with Nate fighting off a large purple gorilla monster. To be honest, this actually wasn’t enough to sell me on the book, even though it was a pretty sweet action scene. It served as an introduction to the meat of the issue, but as introductions go, it wasn’t a great hook. But I kept going, and once the book got into the main plot, I was completely hooked.
That’s because there’s a lot to like here. It feels very much like a first issue, and it has everything you would expect. That’s not a bad thing, though. The characters, plot, and world are already interesting, and this issue has me excited for the next one–which is exactly what a first issue should do. And this one does it quite well.
