Quick Reviews of Stupid Comics 5-3-17

I’m drunk on a Friday night with nothing better to do, which is super sad, so let’s be sad together and talk some stupid comics! These are the ones that I read but couldn’t bother to review for one reason or another.

Also, I’m officially an editor, so I can post this without consequences!

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #53

You know what’s wrong? How good MLP:FiM #52 was. That comic made me laugh a lot while also investing me in this almost-done story that seemed pretty cool, and then in typical MLP comic fashion, it ended like shit. Rushed? Check. Characters acting out of character? Check. Twilight forgiving plot points she should not forgive? Check. Hell, even the artwork sucked this time around, which is wrong because it was really good last month. What gives? Apparently a lot. Thank God for Pinkie Pie (WWPPD) with her Star Wars and Matrix jokes, or the whole thing would have been extra bad.

Rainbow Dash was okay too.

Youngblood #1

Man, Youngblood started off with this rad-as-fuck premise of Yelp reviews but with super heroes. You know how cool that is? Super cool. Chill as hell. I’m 32 below. Bam. Ice cold baby. Sadly, the comic then squanders what potential it has by vomiting text onto the page in a 15-panel storm of god-no-one-gives-a-fuck while expecting me to give a fuck. I liked the starting characters, and I liked the starting plot, and then I stopped caring because apparently they’re not important. I didn’t finish the issue. Too much text, not enough good storytelling.

Extremity #3

It’s maybe a bit wrong that Extremity #3 was my most anticipated comic this week–it was a bad week–but holy shit this YA/dystopian/steampunk mess of parts is really, really good. No, I’m just as surprised as you. The characterization and world building are top notch, and hey, the goddamn robot is the most human character of them all. I’ve half a mind to actually review this and give it a great score, because this really is a great comic. What started off rough is really beginning to show its polish. Also, the opening like three pages are amazing. Damn! Happy days for sure.

Maybe give the trade a look when it’s out. I’ll for-sure try and get a review of that up.

Batman #22

That it isn’t offensively bad is pretty awesome, since most Batman comics are. It is offensively stupid and no one in the comic notices, which is maybe a problem, but you know what, I’m not so prideful that I won’t admit I had some fun. The Flash spends the entire show fixing his COSMIC TREADMILL which is the dumbest pairing of words I’ve ever had to type, but Batman’s interaction with his Flashpoint father were pretty cool. There was actual humanization here not seen in most Batman comics. I appreciate that. Still, the issue was dumb as hell. I blame The Flash who is the literal worst superhero ever. Fuck him.

X-O Manowar #2

Okay, so this book came out last week, but I forgot to delete the emails with the .pdf so here we are. Fun fact: I wanted to stop a few pages in but really couldn’t. Maybe it’s the artwork or the rising tension, but I kept on going. It’s hard to say whether that was a good idea or not since this is still a fairly standard action comic, but the artwork is good and the action is fun. It’s like John Carter of Mars but written now and not a 100 years ago or some shit. Also the dialogue is better. Would I buy it? No. Am I glad I read it and had a quick blast of adrenaline-fueled bloodshed? Yes.

Superman #22

You know how I know most of the writers at DC suck? Because the two comics I should hate–Superman and Wonder Woman–I love. Like, this is some grade-A fucking storytelling right here. I don’t even know what’s going on in this issue but I’m invested by page two because the writing is solid, the artwork is great, and Lois is pretty cool. Also she gets some cool-ass powers and blows some bad people up. What more could I want? A cliffhanger ending to tune in next time? Well fuck! There it is!

DC, it’s not hard to write a superhero comic. Just don’t be a fucking twat. There. You learned what not to do next month. Now go do it.
