Rat Queens to Become Animated Series

Pukeko Pictures, who did work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is set to adapt Image’s Rat Queens comic into an animated series.

Created by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch, Rat Queens has been described as Buffy meets Tank Girl and follows a group of four “booze-guzzling, death-dealing maidens-for-hire” as they go about killing stuff for profit. The comic is both action packed and hilarious, with each of the girls representing some kind of counter-culture with a great tongue-in-cheek humor. It’s a series that thrives on a great story and great characters and provides some great female representation in a genre that’s full of men and/or contains ladies that are typically used as love interests or soft and sweet magic users.

Variety has reported that Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz has said, “‘Rat Queens’ is a standout in the marketplace as a divining rod for fangirls, a market as yet untouched by most comics publishers. It is not only perfect for the TV space, but much needed.”

A 30 minute pilot episode will be made to showcase the series before it gets pitched to TV networks. Hopefully someone will pick it up. In the meantime, check out the excellent comic.
