Quick Time Review: Shadow Warrior 3

Developer: Flying Wild Hog

Publisher: Devolver Digital

Release date: March 1, 2022

Available on: PC, PS4 (reviewed), Xbox One

In 2013, developer Flying Wild Hog rebooted a 1997 action game called Shadow Warrior . The game followed the adventures of the wise-cracking Lo Wang as he battled evil forces with sword and gun. A sequel followed in 2016, and now Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital complete a trilogy with Shadow Warrior 3. At the end of the second game, Lo Wang inadvertently released an ancient dragon. Now he must team up with his former enemy, Orochi Zilla, to track down and defeat the dragon.

Pros

Fast, frenetic action

Silly humor

Fluid weapon swapping

Colorful visuals depicting a Neo-Feudal Japan

Cons

Combat sometimes goes on too long

Camera doesn’t always present the best angle

Platforming can be occasionally frustrating and imprecise

Not much to differentiate itself from the previous two games

In all, Shadow Warrior 3 can be a fun, fast paced action shooter. The weapon swapping has been improved, and Lo Wang’s running commentary is as funny as ever. The game stumbles when it comes to its platforming, where occasionally imprecise controls or poor camera views can lead to unnecessary and frustrating deaths. The game doesn’t really offer much new from its two predecessors, though if you enjoyed them for what they were, you’ll likely enjoy this one.
