Well, don’t I look like an Idiot! What a conference! If you read the Microsoft reaction, I said that Sony couldn’t beat Microsoft. I was unequivocally wrong. Sony toke a punch to the face and responded with a headbutt to the nose. And then gut punch after gut punches with new games and a spotlight on meaningful VR titles. God of War, Days Gone, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Guardian, Detroit: Become Human, Resident Evil 7, Farpoint, then Batman Arkham VR, Star Wars Battlefront VR missions, and Final Fantasy VR missions. Followed by Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. And then, AND THEN! Hideo Kojima announced Death Stranding; Then the reveals ended with Spider-Man made by Insomniac.
So after I stopped squealing with glee, I sat down and realized that Sony had the best conference because they let the games speak for themselves. There was no weak link. If I had to choose one it would be Lego Star Wars but that’s only because we knew that one was announced already. Days Gone seemed to be the push of the conference, and I got some Last of Us vibes from it. Not only the post-apocalyptic setting just some gameplay systems like scavenging and when he tossed that Molotov it had a similar white stroke that The Last of Us had when doing the same thing. But that scene had more Zombies than The Last of Us ever dreamed of. Just pouring over obstacles and debris like water it was impressive. Shout to Sam Witwer, Doomsday himself playing the protagonist. Certainly a game to look forward too. God of War looked a bit like Tomb Raider on steroids. And it finally hit me that Kratos looks just like Grog from Critical Role (inside joke.) This Kratos had a more ginger step then always hulking around in previous games sometimes patient and dodging attacks it wasn’t until the end of a fight we got the crazy screaming Kratos we know and…Well not love but, Tolerate?
Horizon still looks awesome; we got to see more of the role playing elements, and it’s still cool to shoot robots with Arrows. Not much else to say until it releases. Detroit seems to be more in the vein of Heavy Rain than Beyond: Two Souls which is a good thing. Resident Evil was the “Holy Sh*t!” moment for me. I don’t play those games, but the reveal was very smart, and the integration with PSVR is a nice touch. The Star Wars and Batman VR announcements were cool, but I’m curious as to how much content will actually be included in those titles. Call Of Duty probably jumped the shark a few titles ago, but this looked crazy in a right way. After hearing parts of it would take place in space, I rolled my eyes and moved on to the next story but seeing it in action; it looks very impressive.
Then comes my two favorite moments of the show, Hideo Kojima walks out and says “I’m Back” thunderous applause, and that’s it. in the most baller way he lets his trailer do the talking. I have no idea what to make of it, and I doubt we will see that game for a long time but still an awesome moment. As a Spider-Man Fan, I’ve played them all. Every single one. Even the bad ones (in fact most of them are bad.) but Insomniac knows how to make a game and without Activision’s grubby little hands on it I’m excited to see what a Marvel/Sony Spider-Man game looks like. I don’t like the suit, but that’s trivial. We’re Getting a new Spider-Man game! Honestly, both Microsoft and Sony had fantastic conferences. Everybody else was sort of ‘Meh’ and that’s how E3 is sometimes but man is it exciting when the two big dogs show off like they did today. I’m sure most of these games won’t be seen for awhile. But it was quite the spectacle either way. Well Done.
