Sony’s Plans for Spider-Man

An article that came out on Variety earlier today detailed and analyzed Sony Picture’s future projects and how the studio has recently performed in the worldwide box office. A key series that is mentioned in the article is everyone’s favorite wall crawler. Unsurprisingly, the success of 2012’s reboot The Amazing Spider-Man has caused the studio to fast track future plans for the series and schedule it as far as a fourth installment, scheduled for 2018. In addition to the main series, Sony Pictures is pulling a page out of the classic comic playbook and will be expanding the movie universe with two spin-off films focusing on Spidey’s villains, Venom and The Sinister Six.

Well, Variety’s article shed some more light on those spin-offs, detailing the future of all three franchises. For starters, director Marc Webb has been confirmed to direct the third installment of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise in 2016, unsurprising as it is, this only confirms that the next film is in good hands, especially after seeing the film’s most recent trailer.

As it was announced in December, Venom will be helmed by Alex Kurtzman, who hasn’t had much experience directing, but he has written the screenplay for both installments of Amazing Spider-man and will be working on the third along with Roberto Orci. He is also writing the script for the Venom. The Sinister Six film however, will be going outside of the current Spider-man team and will be written by Drew Goddard (World War Z) who could possibly direct the film as well. In addition to this film, Goddard is currently writing the pilot episode for the Daredevil series which will be aired exclusively on Netflix. Neither film currently has a release date.

2099This is all part of Sony’s plan to “have ‘Spider-Man’ movies every year.” said Sony Picture’s co-chairman Amy Pascal. If these spin-off films are well produced and Sony Pictures doesn’t attempt to rush the films or over pack them with characters, Spider-Man 3 showed what can happen with that, there is no doubt that Sony will be able to build a franchise that will compliment Marvel Studios’ powerhouse line-up. Given Spider-Man’s vast world and rogues gallery, there is a large selection of stories for Sony to choose from. Should this success leads to a 2099 A.D film or possible Avenger’s team-up (fingers crossed) We The Nerdy will be at the forefront to bring you the news you care about. Stay tuned.
